Have you ever wondered if a flat pack tiny home could meet the stringent requirements of Australian building codes?

Nexus Engineering turned this curiosity into a reality, successfully adapting a foreign-made structure to comply with local regulations.

This project showcased our expertise in handling complex and unconventional engineering challenges.

Project Overview

Nexus Engineering was tasked with transforming a flat-pack tiny home from China into a fully functional and compliant Australian residence.

Client’s Goals

The client’s primary goal was to create a comfortable and functional tiny home that adhered to Australian building standards. They sought a sustainable and affordable living space that could be easily adapted to their specific needs.

Unique Challenges

The Chinese origin of the flat-pack tiny home presented several unique challenges. The structure was designed for different climate conditions and building standards, requiring some modifications to ensure its suitability for Australia.

Nexus Engineering’s Approach

Nexus Engineering’s team of carefully assessed the structure, identifying areas that needed reinforcement and adaptation. We worked closely with the client and client supplier to understand their specific requirements and preferences, tailoring the design to meet their needs.

By combining our expertise in structural engineering, design, and compliance, we were able to develop a plan to address the challenges and ensure the tiny home met all Australian building regulations.

Nexus Engineering’s Role

Nexus Engineering accepted the challenge of transforming this flat pack tiny home into a compliant and functional Australian residence.

Our team of experienced engineers brought their expertise in structural engineering, design, and compliance to the project.

Key responsibilities included:

  • Structural analysis: Assessing the structural integrity of the tiny home and identifying areas that needed reinforcement.
  • Design modifications: Developing tailored solutions to adapt the structure to Australian building standards, including insulation, safety features, durability and weather resistance.
  • Compliance verification: Ensuring the tiny home met all relevant Australian building codes and regulations. We provided Form 15 Compliance Certificate to the client.
  • Client communication: Maintaining open communication with the client throughout the project, addressing their concerns and keeping them informed of progress.

Overcoming Challenges

Nexus Engineering’s expertise was instrumental in overcoming the challenges posed by the flat-pack tiny home.

Our team implemented the following solutions to ensure compliance with Australian building codes:

Structural Modifications

To ensure the structural integrity of the building, our structural engineers made several modifications in the design of the structure.

  • Additional truss: The structure had four trusses. After careful calculations, we concluded that these four trusses are not sufficient to provide essential structural support.

Therefore, we added a fifth truss to the roof to meet wind load specifications, as required by Australian building codes.

  • Roof batten spacing: We adjusted the spacing of roof battens to comply with local standards.
  • Web members: We added web members to the trusses for increased structural integrity.

Lifespan Enhancement

These flat pack tiny homes come with a standard life-span of 20 years. However, the building codes for Queensland Australia want a 50-yearr lifespan for residential buildings. Increasing the lifespan of the structure was a challenging task.

To achieve this goal, we proposed the following solutions that helped achieve a minimum lifespan of 50 years thus making it compliant with Australian standards.

  • Interior framing: We added extra framing on the interior to extend the lifespan of the structure.
  • Steel construction: We ensured that all external components were made of steel to enhance durability and fire resistance.
  • Cladding: We applied cladding to the exterior of the building to protect the interior framing and sandwich panels.
